I do not even know where to start. The last year has been a whirlwind. This time last year I had just graduated with a degree in accounting and had big dreams of being a part of full time ministry with a church in Atlanta. See the connection there right?
Well, let me tell you we serve quite a funny Jesus. On the other side of that year, I am living here in Atlanta, and now working as a full time accountant at a firm here in town. Like I said, the first year of adulthood is a whirlwind and can result in total 180s.
So, you may be asking, how did you get there? How does this relate to me? I honestly do not know, but let me share a few things I have learned in the last year.
Make obedience to Christ first and foremost.
He is a Father who loves you and is working on your behalf. As perfect as our plans seem to be to us, His plans and purposes are far greater.
Amidst the chaos, find sweet peace and rest in the arms of Jesus. Honestly, Psalm 62:5-8 and Isaiah 26:3 are verses I continually have to come back to.
Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
These verses did not take away the chaos or lack of direction in my circumstances. However, they did dispel the ever-encroaching doubt. They reminded me of not only how secure and stable my Savior was, but also the great hope I had access to in Him.Amidst the chaos, find sweet peace and rest in the arms of Jesus. Click To Tweet
Step out in faith.
If you are seeking Him obediently, sometimes boldness in taking the next step is what He wants. My mantra has always been: “Keep walking because it is far easier for Jesus to redirect if I am already moving.” Now, don’t take that to mean go make irrational decisions because that is by no means the best plan. However, if you are walking with Jesus daily, His desires naturally will become your desires. Spend some time asking for him to burden your heart for a city or a career field or a people group…He will do it!
Once you have stepped out in faith…do it again! Keep taking steps out of faith and out of your comfort zone. If you find yourself in a new city, find community. Invest in the community. Apply for fun new jobs. Be proactive. Being new in a city doesn’t have to be scary. There is so much to explore and get to know, so jump in. Plus, being able to pull the “I am new here” card in conversation really helps (I am still using that one).
Finally, just buckle up and enjoy the ride.
Is this where I thought I would be this time last year? Nope, but that is the beauty of it. Many tears were shed and doubts abounded, both spoken and unspoken.
However, I can certainly tell you this: Jesus has sweet and powerful things in store for each and every one of you. Do not doubt that for a second. Keep seeking His face and rolling with the punches. You probably will not land your dream job right after graduation. Honestly, you could work as a nanny or flip burgers for the next few years, but there is beauty in that if it means you are being obedient to Jesus. Each person you encounter needs to see Jesus in you. Ask Jesus to show you unique purpose in each day and each encounter. Fighting to see the Kingdom purpose in the mundane and ordinary tasks of everyday life is what kept me going most of the past year. You could work as a nanny or flip burgers for the next few years, but there is beauty in that if it… Click To Tweet
I am not working my dream job, but I do love my city. I love my new friends and have found unique ways to get plugged into my community. Above all though, I am so overwhelmed and humbled by my Heavenly Father and His faithfulness and provision.
I buckled up and decided to enjoy the ride.
